TEN TIPS FOR WATER CONSERVATION
  1. Water your lawn only when it needs it. Step on your grass. If it springs back, when you lift your foot, it doesn't need water. Better yet, especially in times of drought, water with a hose. And best of all, convert your lawn to native plants.  (Running a lawn mower for 1 hour releases as much pollution as driving a car 350 miles.)  See Sarasota's water restrictions.
  2. Fix leaky faucets and plumbing joints.
  3. Don't run the hose while washing your car. Use a bucket of water and a quick hose rinse at the end.
  4. Install water-saving shower heads or flow restrictors.
  5. Run only full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher.
  6. Shorten your showers.
  7. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks.
  8. Don't use your toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket.
  9. Capture tap water. While you wait for hot water to come down the pipes, catch the flow in a watering can to use later on house plants or your garden.
  10. Don't water the sidewalks, driveway or gutter. Adjust your sprinklers so that water lands on your lawn or garden where it belongs--and only there.

Sarasota County Water use restrictions

Lawn and landscape watering is limited to one day a week. Addresses ending in even numbers (or A - M) can water on Tuesday. Addresses ending in odd numbers (or N - Z) can water on Thursday.

Irrigation is prohibited from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except irrigation with recycled wastewater, which is allowed any time, any day. Reclaimed water users must comply with the time of use restrictions. There is no limit to the number of days that reclaimed water irrigation may occur.

Hand watering of plants, excluding lawns, is permitted any day.

Cars may be washed anytime, as long as a hand held hose with a shut-off nozzle is used.

Rinsing boats and flushing boat motors is allowed for 10 minutes daily
